Announcing AppleWorks:

A new, integrated software package that combines word processing, financial modeling, and data-base management programs.

AppleWorks brings together the three applications that personal computer owners use most often — a versatile word processor, a large and fast spreadsheet program, and a powerful data-base management system.

More important, the three programs are linked together, allowing them to share information, and allowing you to switch back and forth between them quickly. AppleWorks and your Apple //* computer become, in effect, a single "productivity tool" that is both easy to learn and easy to use.

* AppleWorks does not run on the Apple II Plus or its predecessor, the Integer-BASIC Apple II.

The Data Base helps you organize information you would ordinarily keep in lists or on index cards — information like names and addresses, expense items, house and business inventories, checkbook records, travel itineraries, and names of business contacts.

The Word Processor helps you create documents you have previously used a pen, pencil, or typewriter to produce — memos, letters, reports, proposals, and articles. It lets you create, edit, and print any of these documents, formatted to your specifications.

The Spreadsheet helps you work with numeric information you ordinarily keep in rows and columns — financial statements and models, forecasts and budgets.

Three-in-one:

A total solution in a single package

AppleWorks puts the three most popular applications for personal computers at your fingertips. Even better, it allows these three applications to work together, so that information can flow back and forth between them.

This feature, called "software integration," means that AppleWorks alone can handle most of your computing needs. And handle them more easily — and more efficiently — than ever before.

▪  Its commands work the same way in each program. If you can use one application, you can use all three.

▪  You can easily transfer information from one application to another. For example, you can "cut" a budget created with the spreadsheet program and "paste" it directly into a report created with the word processor.

▪  It takes only a few keystrokes, and a few seconds, to move among the three applications. What's more, you can keep up to twelve files in memory at once for fast access to any type of information you need.

Each of the three applications within AppleWorks is a first-rate program in its own right. Together, they become an unbeatable team for just about any need.

Word processing:

This is a powerful word-handling program that incorporates many features of the most advanced stand-alone word-processing systems. For starters, it shows page breaks, centering, and indented text on the screen as they occur in the printed document. It also provides simple cursor movement, and allows you to easily insert, delete, search and replace, and move text. Furthermore, AppleWorks can handle proportional spacing and produce special print features, such as underline, boldface, superscript, and subscript.*

* AppleWorks does not support all features on all printers

Data-base management:

This is an enhanced version of the popular Quick File™ data-base program. You can use it to store any type of information, and review all or part of it with a few keystrokes. The data-base program lets you track up to thirty categories of information per file, and sort through them quickly. You can merge files, or bring in files from Quick File //. Furthermore, AppleWorks has its own built-in report writer, allowing you to product printed tables or mailing labels from your data-base files.

Financial modeling:

The AppleWorks spreadsheet is BIG — 999 rows by 127 columns, making it large enough to handle your most rigorous financial modeling needs. The program also reads VisiCalc® files, so you can transfer most existing models into it. The spreadsheet has many advanced features, including individually variable column widths, enhanced cell formatting, cell protection, and sorting by rows. It uses an advanced high-precision numerics package for accuracy up to 15 digits.

Desktop Manager

This is the "housekeeper" that keeps all three applications running together smoothly while it handles all the technical details for you. For instance, the Desktop Manager helps you save and load information and format disks. It's entirely menu driven, using drawings of "file folders" on the screen to guide you through the program quickly and easily.

AppleWorks uses ProDOS™, our new high-performance Apple // operating system. This means that data goes to and from the disk quickly. It also means that you can use AppleWorks with our ProFile™ hard-disk storage system.

We've designed AppleWorks so that it can be learned quickly and easily, and then used with pleasure. An interactive training program included with AppleWorks helps you get started.

The program itself uses help screens, along with conversational messages to guide you step by step. And the documentation is written with the clarity that is an Apple trademark.

Its sophisticated features make it a welcome and important addition to the office. Its simplicity and ease of use ensure that it will get a good workout in homes and schools.

And now the best part. AppleWorks sells for considerably less than you'd expect to pay for a similar set of programs. We're experienced at designing programs for the Apple, and that allows us to deliver this powerful package at such a reasonable price.

“... AppleWorks probably has the best interface of any program that I've used - and that includes those on the Mac.

Its interface is also consistent between the different applications within the integration.

I would suggest that AppleWorks' use of file card menus is a more intuitive way to work than even

icons and pulldown blinds - and it doesn't require a mouse.”  — Stewart Fist in Your Computer (January 1988)
